As the man who took yoga international, Iyengar is remembered around the world as ‘yoga guru’ who founded a particular style of practice and made it famous across the globe. So much so that Iyengar yoga is practiced in over 70 nations today.
Iyengar is a celebrated personality not only in India but also in the West. On his birthday, we take a look at his life that transformed many others.
1. Bellur Krishnamachar Sundararaja Iyengar was born into a family with humble background, on 14th December, 1918, in Southern India.
2. He was one of the 13 children born, out of which 10 had survived.
3. As a child, Iyengar suffered from malaria and typhoid. It was after he was introduced to yoga by his brother-in-law that his health improved.
4. Iyengar’s brother-in-law was the famous Tirumalai Krishnamacharya, who is also known as ‘the father of modern yoga’.
