On Becoming A Time Lord
by Nigel Taylor
Today, I would like us to look at something very important. The idea of meditation and how it relates to time.
Whether or not you are an avid or first time meditator, I think you will enjoy this short dialogue. Firstly…let’s look at “time”.
Human beings seem to be in a constant struggle with time. We want it to go faster, we want it to slow down, we want it to stop completely. Yet time marches on, unperturbed by our desires for control. But time is an interesting thing. How we perceive time greatly influences how we feel about success, and our own level of control.
We’ve all experienced an era in our lives when time seems to speed up. Perhaps it was a time when “busy” could hardly describe how jammed-packed your schedule was. Perhaps it was a time of great happiness and joy when the hours just seemed to fly away. Whatever the reason for this quick passage of time, we all of the sudden find ourselves in a place far from where we started, wondering how in the world we got there.
Other periods of our lives made time seem to slow down considerably. A long illness, a tragic loss, an arduous task, impatient anticipation of a desired event. All of these can slow the clock down to where we almost feel suspended, weary of the minutes and hours that seem to linger longer than they should.
Time doesn’t actually speed up or slow down, but the events in our lives shape how we perceive time. In a period of emotional upheaval, time generally appears to go much slower. In times of great joy, time appears to move by rapidly. Our engagement with life itself determines how we experience time. Time, if we do not honour it with value, can play havoc with our lives.
When people begin a meditation practice, they are learning to master the energetic patterns that determine the outcomes in their life. Relaxation of the body, through posture, breath and sensory input, channels the life force energies (Prana or Chi) into a more focussed use. Once these energies are trained to respond to our deepest wishes, waves of peace start to flow over and through you.
These waves of peace have a circular relationship to our thoughts. That is to say, it first takes an act of Will to choose to meditate. That act of will is a thought generated response. Choosing calm. The choice then generates the physiological response (calming of body/ mind/soul complex) which then allows more peaceful harmonious thoughts to flow into one’s stream of awareness.
Accompanying this activity is the gift of Self Reflection. This is a quality that enables one to review, reassess and evolve from lessons learned into a higher state of awareness. And with that comes a new perception that is destined to bring greater success. You cannot, however, assess, review or correct life energies to flow the way you want if you are under stress and time is flowing by rapidly. Time and space appear to disappear when one slows down the rhythm of life.
I encourage you to slow down your thinking. Take time to meditate at least once a week, then once a day when you see the benefits.
I know you will enjoy it. Time will change for you! You will then have a new friend, one that will work with you.
In essence, your success in life is intimately tied to how you perceive time. And when you realize that, you can change your perception to match your image of success. Enjoy your success with every waking breath.
