Investment And The Law of Attraction
In 2012, I was working evenings as a VIP Reservationist at one of the world’s most exclusive restaurants, while designing small fashion collections, plodding toward my dream of becoming a fashion designer. The restaurant where I worked, was popular within the fashion and entertainment circles, and often rented its dining room to magazines like Vogue for in-book photo spreads. At the time, I was building relationships with an increasing amount of magazine editors who would profile my designs in their publications. The restaurant owners even let me shoot my collection’s lookbook at the venue, a $25K cost offered to me gratis.
Retail buyers from department stores dined at the restaurant and, during our small talk, would agree to meet and review my collection. At the time I only had the budget to produce four-look collections, which was not enough of an assortment to be taken seriously by a store like Saks Fifth Avenue. So, I decided it was time to create my first full scale collection to present to buyers.
During down times at work, I designed the collection on waiter dupe checks and on the back of old menu paper. The restaurant’s patrons and employees were very chic, so I constantly found inspiration in my surroundings at work.
